<image:title>About - Dr. Andrea Nied, PT, DPT</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Andrea Nied, PT, DPT has been a Doctor of Physical Therapy in Colorado since 2011, when she moved to Arvada immediately after finishing physical therapy school at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Andrea has extensive experience working with all orthopedic conditions, as well as a specialization in pelvic health, dry needling, abdominal visceral mobilization, Maya abdominal massage, and spine rehabilitation. Her favorite treatment technique is dry needling because of the quick results it gets her patients! Dr. Andrea decided to pursue a specialization in pelvic floor physical therapy due to her personal struggles with postpartum health. After the birth of her daughter in 2016, Dr. Andrea was experiencing low back pain that wasn’t going away with her typical physical therapy work. Then, 6 months after her daughter was born, she decided to take a pelvic floor course, and was blown away that her back pain immediately went away that weekend! The pain was actually coming from the pelvic floor and not her back! She was hooked! After her son was born in 2017, Andrea successfully treated her other postpartum problems including bladder leakage, prolapse, and pelvic pain. Dr. Andrea and her family love traveling the world and even spent 3 years living in London, UK. In 2021, Andrea, her husband, and two young children made the decision to leave London and return to beautiful Arvada. In her free time, she loves hiking, paddleboarding, skiing, and playing with her dog, Murphy!</image:caption>

<image:title>Back Pain - BACK PAIN</image:title>
<image:caption>Are you still dealing with back pain after having your baby 1 year, 5 years, even 10+ years ago? Do you have back pain that hasn’t gone away with traditional physical therapy? One of the most common conditions I treat are moms that are still dealing with low back pain years after they have had their babies. Research tells us that about 80% of people will deal with low back pain in their lifetime! I see moms and general people with back pain every day and I’m here to provide you with the tools to deal with the ROOT of the problem with your back pain so it doesn’t come back again. Putting ice or heat on it or getting a massage may feel nice for the short term, but that is not actually going to fix the problem for good! When you are properly evaluated for your low back pain, we will examine posture, movement when the pain comes on, examine the joints of your back, pelvis, and hips, look for areas of tightness or weakness in the back and hip muscles, and then provide you a DETAILED program that will get rid of your back pain!</image:caption>

<image:title>Pelvic & Hip Pain - PELVIC & HIP PAIN</image:title>
<image:caption>Did you know that the pelvic floor muscles can sometimes refer pain to the hips, groin, and low back? If you are dealing with nagging pain in your pelvis or hips and it hasn’t gone away with traditional PT, we can help. If you have pelvic or hip pain accompanied by symptoms that are related to pelvic floor dysfunction like, bladder or bowel leakage, it is best you have an exam by a pelvic floor therapist to check the pelvic floor muscles to treat the entire problem. Common diagnoses of the pelvis and hip that we treat: Pelvic pain Dyspareunia Vulvodynia Vaginismus Pudendal neuralgia Endometriosis Pelvic Organ Prolapse Constipation Abdominal Pain Post Op: hysterectomies, pelvic reconstruction, and abdominal surgeries Painful Periods Hip Impingement IT Band Pain Pubic Symphysis Dysfunction SI Joint Pain A pelvic floor muscle exam will give us a lot of information about what is happening with the pelvic floor muscles and we will develop a treatment plan to get rid of the pain for good. During the pelvic floor muscle exam, with consent, we assess the muscles by using a finger internally, either in the vagina or rectum. This gives us the best picture and helps us determine if the muscles are tight, weak, or have poor coordination, and then we can start with the best treatment plan specific to your pelvic floor or hip problem and to your goals!</image:caption>

<image:title>Postpartum - POSTPARTUM</image:title>
<image:caption>Every woman deserves a postpartum check up after having a baby, whether you had a vaginal birth or c-section. Pelvic floor physical therapy is the best treatment option for getting you back to feeling your best so you can take care of kids and do the workouts you love. One problem I hear from a lot of women is that they had their babies 5, 10, even 20 years ago and they think it’s too late to work on the problems they have had since giving birth. It is not too late! The following is a list of the many conditions women experience after giving birth: Pelvic Pain Incontinence: Bladder or Bowel Leakage Pelvic Organ Prolapse Diastasis Recti or “Mom Pooch” C-Section Scar Pain Painful Intercourse SI joint pain Tailbone pain Groin pain Constipation These problems are really common, but they are not normal! And yes, it is never too late to start working on yourself! The human body is amazing and can do remarkable things.</image:caption>

<image:title>Bladder & Bowel Leakage - BLADDER & BOWEL ISSUES</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most common, but definitely not normal, problems we treat is bladder leakage, also known as urinary incontinence. It’s a super frustrating problem to have, and many women can experience leaking even if they didn’t have a baby. Some people leak when they cough, sneeze, laugh, or jump, and this is called stress incontinence. Other times, the leaking occurs when you hear running water, or you're trying to race home to get to your own toilet and then leak before you get there. This is called urge incontinence. If you sustain a large tear after a vaginal birth, sometimes bowel incontinence can occur, if the tear involves the muscles around the anus. This can look like having difficulty with keeping clean and feeling like you always have to wipe, even if you didn't have a bowel movement. We can help by checking the muscles in the pelvic floor and rectum to see what is causing the bowel leakage. With men, we often see issues like inability to get the stream of urine started, feeling like its difficulty to get all the urine out, and leaks after you thought you were done with urinating! Men and women can also have issues with constipation that can be related to a tight pelvic floor or abdominal wall. We work on movement techniques like abdominal massage, pelvic floor release, and exercise to get the bowels moving again! In pelvic floor therapy, we determine if the pelvic floor muscles are weak, tight, or a combo of both. When the pelvic floor muscles are weak, they don’t have the tension or ability to close off the opening where your pee comes out (urethra). Then, you would require a strengthening program to get them stronger so you no longer leak! However, most often we find areas of tightness or muscle tension that we need to release first. Think about your pelvic floor like a trampoline. It needs the perfect amount of tension to support your organs and close off the openings to hold in pee and poop. When your pelvic floor is under more tension or tight, a little extra pressure from a cough, sneeze, or laugh will cause leaking to occur. So now you may ask yourself, how do I know if my pelvic floor is tight or weak? That’s when you need a specialized evaluation of your pelvic floor muscles and get you on the right program!</image:caption>

<image:title>Pain with Intercourse - PAIN WITH INTERCOURSE</image:title>
<image:caption>It can be extremely frustrating when you can’t connect and be intimate with your partner due to pelvic pain. It can really put a strain on relationships. Many people think the pain will just go away with time after having a baby. Worse yet, the advice given is just “drink a glass of wine, or take some painkillers” before being intimate with their partner. We can help address pain with intercourse by determining which pelvic muscles are the problem, treat those muscles and help with educating on positions to help with reducing pain. If you are having pain with sexual activity, it is really important to examine if your pain is coming from a place of past sexual trauma. If it is, a multi-disciplinary approach with a mental health professional alongside pelvic floor PT can be the key to getting rid of this pain.</image:caption>
